For this project, Juno was entrusted to manage the transportation of multiple oversized and overweight cargo pieces from the Port of Baltimore to their final destination. As with many complex project cargo moves, success depended on early planning, close coordination, and hands-on project management.
Prior to the cargo's arrival, Juno's Project Cargo team met with key stakeholders to develop a detailed transportation plan covering cargo specifications, equipment requirements, staging locations, and delivery schedules. Leveraging our strong relationship with the Baltimore terminal, we coordinated closely with port personnel weeks in advance to prepare for the operation.
At the time, the port was experiencing significant congestion and operating at more than 120% capacity. Despite these challenges, our team worked proactively with terminal contacts to secure staging areas, coordinate loading activities, and minimize potential delays. Juno personnel were onsite throughout the loading process to oversee operations and ensure GPS tracking devices were installed on every truckload, providing full shipment visibility from origin to destination.
The project required a range of specialized transportation equipment, including flatbeds, step decks, double-drop trailers, and multi-axle RGN trailers. The largest piece measured approximately 780 x 415 x 375 cm (307 x 163 x 148 inches) and weighed nearly 85,200 kilograms (188,000 pounds), requiring a 19-axle trailer along with specialized permits and police escorts to safely navigate the route.
To support loading and unloading operations, Juno coordinated the availability of heavy forklifts and cranes at both the port and delivery site. Additional cargo protection measures were also implemented, including tarping and Conestoga trailer solutions, based on the specific requirements of the shipment.
Throughout the project, Juno maintained daily communication with the client, rigging teams, carriers, and terminal personnel, ensuring all parties remained informed of shipment progress and project milestones.
