June 2026 - Section 232 Tariff Changes for Steel, Aluminum, and Copper Imports

On June 1, 2026, updates were announced to the Section 232 tariff program affecting certain steel, aluminum, and copper imports. The changes are intended to support domestic manufacturing while providing temporary relief for certain agricultural, industrial, and construction equipment sectors.

Reduced Tariff Rate for Certain Equipment

  • Agricultural equipment, construction equipment, material-handling equipment, and certain industrial machinery may qualify for a reduced Section 232 duty rate of 15%, reduced from the previous 25% rate.

  • This reduced rate is currently scheduled to remain in effect through December 31, 2027.

Reduced Duty for Equipment with U.S. - Origin Metal Content

  • Certain imported capital equipment may qualify for a further reduced 10% Section 232 duty rate if it contains at least 85% U.S.-origin steel, aluminum, or copper, based on applicable weight requirements.

Existing Tariff Rates Remain in Place for Most Metal Products

  • Articles principally consisting of steel, aluminum, or copper generally remain subject to the existing 50% Section 232 tariff rate.

  • Many derivative steel, aluminum, and copper products continue to be subject to the 25% Section 232 tariff rate.

Importers should review product classifications and eligibility requirements carefully to determine whether these reduced rates may apply.
